The company that produces Jiffy baking mixes, out of Chelsea, MI, has just won my heart all over again. They first hooked me when we got to tour their facilities in elementary school, and I was fascinated to learn that they do NOT advertise, and yet people still heartily consume their product. It was quite possibly the most authentic economics lesson I’ve ever been taught: great product doesn’t require lame-ass hustling! Plus, I can’t forget my teacher making a HUGE deal that CHELSEA Michigan was in CLINTON county - “Get it?! Chelsea Clinton!” - har har hrrrmph. It was 1994, but still. Not that funny, teach.
I love that their mixes are still less than $1/box AND that the recipes printed on them are ACTUALLY SIMPLE and easy to create! I feel inadequate when recipes call for esoteric ingredients (banana liquer?! powdered pecans?!) or ridiculous methods that no amateur cook should ever possess or understand. That’s why we have professionals.
So, although my conflict of interest might be that I REALLY WANT Michigan to start economically healing…. GO OUT AND BUY SOME JIFFY MIX! You’ll greatly enjoy it, and who DOESN’T think that baking for yourself or others is super-therapeutic? Have fun.
