I think that would be a decent album title, though it also functions as a description of my upcoming afternoon. In a very Ocean’s 12 kind of way, I’ll drive to the airport, park my car, meet a dear friend for lunch IN the airport who JUST came in from Chicago, and then she will drive away with the car and I will fly to Detroit (where I’ll rent another car, hence the pluralization in the title). BALLIN’. She will then pick me up when I arrive Sunday night, after a weekend with her own family in Maine. Don’t you just love symmetry?
Caitlin (airport hijinks friend) and I taught for America together, in addition to many other priceless adventures and cherished memories. For example, we got to watch the 8/8/08 Olympics kick-off in her family’s MAINE living room, while her mom made us pizza. How many 25-27 year-olds can do that?! She also stayed with me and my sister the night before the wedding - which became quite a Collinsian epic… That same sister and she spent a couple months in the SAME Guatemalan town this summer!! Hooray for thriving long-distance friendships. :)
On a different note, we’ve learned a lot this week about sleep and wakefulness, the mysterious phenomena of dreams, sleep disorders, and general brain circuitry that was previously something I hadn’t even WONDERED about, let alone expected to learn. Fascinating! I have always had very vivid dreams, with intricate colorful storylines and occasionally frightening plot twists (totally normal - I swear). Last night, possibly due to pre-travel-anxiety OR a flight of tasty brews at Sunset Cantina, I had one of the MOST complicated and bizarre dreams ever.
Basic highlights:
- became witness to a sketchy apartment/hotel suite where a friend from school stays with her bf when he’s in town - and yet she has no idea how he can afford the thousands of dollars it costs per night…
- had to eject the diamond from my engagement ring and hide it in my mouth so that people wouldn’t take it and feed it to a baby (it’s considered healthy for them). The ring was then an empty spiky metal base and I couldn’t stop staring at it…
- cared for a 1-month old baby girl (so cute!) and was stunned to hear her TALK! Jon was surprised that I was surprised, and it was a losing battle to explain that there’s no way she should be able to produce intelligible speech…
- ran with a completely absurd cross-country team, composed of mostly friends from dental school, and I just couldn’t find a friend to chat with! I kept jogging between groups and feeling terribly lame.
- rode the LETS bus around my hometown and got dropped off in front of the old Golf-o-rama, which has in fact been closed for years.
I have no idea how many sleep cycles it takes to fit in this much dreaming, but I’m sure it helped that I slept for 8.5 hours. WEIRD!
