Jon and I spent a wonderful couple days on Cape Cod this weekend, in the company of our good friend (since high school), Abby. We came in Saturday around noon and enjoyed some local Buzzard’s Bay Thai food with our generous hostess, catching up on her recent adventures in life and learning more about the lay of the land for real Cape Codders. We always love to hear local perspectives while traveling, whether from friends in Napa or Cape Cod. Gotta love authentic regional gossip and hidden treasures that only an insider can dish. Heehee. :)

Our mission for the day was to bike the entire Cape Cod Rail Trail, which is GORGEOUS and completely worth the time and energy to cover all FORTY-FIVE miles of its roundtrip splendor! During the 4 hours of cycling, we had lots of time to both chat and just quietly soak in the uninterrupted beauty of this simple, FREE, well-groomed and thankfully-flat trail. It starts off in Dennis, MA (my Dad’s name) and ends 22.5 miles later in another perfectly-named town: Wellfleet. Definitely my longest bike ride ever, though Jon has successfully covered 100 in a single day (Chicago to Milwaukee!). I’m working on it…

It was unclear whether we’d get back to the starting point by sunset, but we managed to take short enough breaks to catch a glimpse of the sun setting over ACTUAL cranberry bogs on our way back to the car!!! I thought such things were the fictitious product of Ocean Spray juice commercials, but no! They are real. And adorable.

We enjoyed a leisurely, indulgent post-biking meal at The British Beer Company in the appropriately-British-sounding town of Sandwich, MA. It was a great place to sample the eponymous brews of Cape Cod Beer and guarantee that there were no net calories burned that day, despite the lllooonngg workout. This morning we walked and drove around the gorgeous town of Falmouth, and headed home to Boston after a photo shoot on the ocean (see above) and another delicious meal (food photos to be posted soon!).

Back to reality - but thankfully not until another day off tomorrow. Long weekends are such a gift.
