I thoroughly resisted Jon’s plea to go see Zombieland with him…. for about two weeks. Then, I caved to my better judgment and decided that our Columbus day free afternoon could be spent in worse ways. I purposefully didn’t look anything up about the movie beforehand, to make sure that I wasn’t grossed out or disturbed to the point that I would flat out refuse my husband’s patient requests to indulge in a film that he was certain would be a real winner.
He was right!
Had I actually taken 5 seconds to get a sense of the critical acclaim out there, I would have become thrilled to partake, but no. I even sat through the first five minutes of the gory intro sequence with my eyes closed, half-convinced that I’d be sleeping soon so as to avoid the bloody images before me. They actually subsided quickly, and an adorable adventure story emerged. Optimistic, suspenseful, hilarious, and VERY 2009! You’ll see what I mean.
The preview on the website is a perfect summary of the film, and for exactly that reason, DON’T WATCH IT! Gives away far too much. My only disappointment was that the co-lead male role was CLEARLY written for Michael Cera and I wonder if they tried to get him but he was maybe too expensive? Easily grossed out like me? Not interested? I just pictured him playing that role anyways - no biggie.
If you were convinced it’s a waste of time, as I was, and you get an invitation to go see it with a dashingly handsome man, don’t miss out! You’ll enjoy it.
