Massachusetts is a fabulous state to live in as national healthcare reform evolves. By no means am I a knowledgeable healthpolicywonk, but several great health law advocacy opportunities have presented themselves over the past year and a half. For example, tomorrow I am so lucky to be able to attend the annual benefit breakfast of Boston’s HealthLawAdvocates, run through the impressively oral health conscious Health Care for All. The Daily Show’s own Larry Wilmore will be there to entertain and I’ll be reppin’ for the Harvard School of Dental Medicine while enjoying a lavish morning meal and networkin’ it. Can’t WAIT. :) Let’s just say it will be more intriguing than analyzing chest x-rays and postulating the mechanisms of emphysema.
Another exciting health law adventure happened last spring, when a couple friends and I took a stab at writing our own legislative fact sheet for an exciting bill that would expand health coverage for children born with clefts lip/palate - which is still hovering in the state finance committee and has until late 2010 to pass. Fingers crossed! Who knows if anyone has been influenced by our handiwork, but it certainly influenced us to be more policy-conscious dental students.
If you have ANY curiosity or interest whatsoever in healthcare reform, I highly recommend spending some of your InternetTimeWasting Budget on the websites of HealthLawAdvocates AND HealthCareForAll, both of which will inspire and educate you as to what’s possible in achieving health equity. I LOVE IT.
